The Centre for Western Armenian Studies is delighted to announce that our online Western Armenian conversation meetings will be continuing for another cycle as the Society of Western Armenian Speakers.
This will be familiar to some of our friends as the name of the events we used to hold in London on the the last Sunday of the month. Starting in 2009, we began to host these informal meetings in order to create a space where Western Armenian speakers and learners could get to know each other and practice the speaking their heritage language. We are glad to be able to revive this name as the Centre for Western Armenian Studies approaches its tenth anniversary.
About the meetings
There are no textbooks, exercises, traditional teaching etc. There is no teacher; the leader of the meeting will play the role of another participant. There will be conversation practice to build your language skills for everyday use on different topics, as well as an element of grammar in order to consolidate your current language skills.
The meetings will start on Sunday 10 July 2022, and will run for 10 weeks.
- Group A: 9.30 AM (UK time)
- Group B: 5 PM (UK time)
- Group C: 6.30 PM (UK time).
The cycle costs £137. Please note that this is not refundable.
For the first 25-30 minutes of each meeting, every participant will have 4-5 minutes to talk on a topic of his/her choice. There will then be a general discussion on a topic which will be decided either by our team or by the participants collectively. We will send out the relevant vocabulary, phrases and expressions in advance so that participants will have time to prepare. Dr Krikor Moskofian will lead these meetings with the help of another colleague fluent in Western Armenian.
The topics could be anything that might interest you; contemporary issues, art, religion, politics, food, literature, nature, your profession, etc.
Every week one grammatical feature will be explained. Everyone should come up one or two grammatical questions, such as grammatical rules which are not clear or have baffled you for years. These will be explained during the meetings or via email.
We will support you throughout the cycle. Should the need arise you can have a one-to-one meeting with Krikor once per cycle (around 30 minutes).
Word of the day
During the cycle you will receive an Armenian word every day with the meaning, etymology or the structure explained and used in a sentence.
From time to time you will receive Western Armenian songs (with lyrics) and videos for further language practice.
