Western Armenian Online College

We run the first fully-taught Western Armenian Online College, offering courses from Beginners’ to Advanced levels. The courses are taught on Zoom, and are designed, organised and taught by Dr Krikor Moskofian, along with an assistant teacher.

All courses take place once a week and run for ten weeks, and each session lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. The fee per cycle is £215.

Beginners’

During this course, participants will familiarise themselves with the Armenian alphabet using a method devised by the Centre for Western Armenian Studies. Each week a group of letters will be introduced with relevant exercises. Over ten weeks participants will learn the alphabet and take their first steps in speaking, and will also become familiar with the different parts of speech as they learn to read.

Upper Beginners’

Participants will revise and develop the knowledge they have acquired in the Beginners’ course, and will learn to express feelings, describe objects and people, and express possession, as well as studying certain grammatical rules.

Lower Elementary

Participants will revise and develop the knowledge they have acquired in the Beginners’ and Upper Beginners’ courses. They will also tackle confusing letters and difficult to pronounce words and sounds; learn to describe the location of objects; have their first taste of noun cases; learn expressions of need; and learn to construct more complex sentences using the relevant vocabulary.

Elementary

Participants will study the present and present continuous conjugations of regular verbs, and begin to learn declension patterns as well as prepositions.

Upper Elementary

Participants will learn the capital letters, increase their familiarity with the conjugation of the present tenses of regular verbs, learn the future tense, take their first steps in past tense and learn negating all these tenses, as well as regular declension patterns. They will acquire syntactical structures and practise sophisticated sentences. New vocabulary will allow participants to express their views on different topics.

Reinforcement 1

Focusing intensely on new vocabulary, this course will provide exercises on previously learnt grammar, such as the present and future tenses, while covering a wide range of topical vocabulary, from geography to animals to cooking utensils.

Lower Intermediate

This is a consolidation course. Rather than learning new knowledge, participants will use this level to put into practice everything they have learnt since the Beginners’ course, with a particular focus on practising speaking Western Armenian naturally.

Intermediate 1

Participants will focus on past tense verb conjugations and special declension patterns, using them in a range of simple to complex sentences, all the while adding related vocabulary to their knowledge base.

Intermediate 2

Participants will revise their past tense and special declension knowledge while focusing on giving commands (the imperative mood) and learning new vocabulary through games that reinforce memorising new words.

Intermediate 3

Participants will revise the past tense and imperative moods, and learn to conjugate the negative imperative and the past imperfect tense. They will also learn new vocabulary, new declension patterns, and express themselves using more complex sentences.

Reinforcement 2

This course will focus on new vocabulary; previously learnt grammatical patterns, such as past simple and imperfect tenses and the imperative mood; and speaking practice.

Upper Intermediate

Participants will revise the past tense and imperative moods, and learn to conjugate the negative imperative and the past imperfect tense. They will also learn new vocabulary, the formation of adverbs, new declension patterns, and express themselves using more complex sentences.

Lower Advanced

Participants will learn the present perfect tense and the types of verbs while revising adverbs, the declensions, and all of the verb conjugations they have learnt to date. They will also work on new vocabulary focusing on adjectives and antonyms.

Advanced 1

In this course, participants will learn how to decline and properly use the personal pronouns. They will consolidate their knowledge of the past perfect tense, revise passive verbs, past tenses and the imperative mood, and work on conjunctions, adjectives and antonyms.

Advanced 2

Participants will revise the verb conjugations, personal pronoun declensions, and vocabulary covered while being introduced to the past perfect tense.

Reinforcement 3

This course focuses on speaking and vocabulary. Participants will also revise the past tenses and the personal pronoun declensions.

Reinforcement 4

This course is vocabulary-orientated and includes speaking practice. Participants will read longer texts containing past tenses and work on verb-object concordance.

Reinforcement 5

The goal of this course is to help participants learn new vocabulary, revisit previously learnt verb conjugations, and to help with more speaking practice. Participants will learn to use select topical verbs and work on verb-object concordance.

Reinforcement 6

This consolidation and speaking course revises verb-object concordance and all of the vocabulary from the previous courses while adding new vocabulary, especially focusing on countries, their citizens, languages and adjectives. The course also covers the creation and understanding of compound nouns with a wide range of root words.
